January 2010
Here’s where I’ve been in the past few months, and some gems from each event.
In Sept, I attended the annual Cancer Control Society Conference, where it became clear that cancer is not one single condition, and that the usual cutting, burning and chemo wasn’t the only or, in a lot of cases, best choice. See their site for innovative and effective means of dealing with this ever-increasing epidemic. The main lesson here: cancer is NOT simple a tumor to remove, or a spreading scourge to defeat with chemo and radiation: it’s your inner and outer environment that bear watching and detoxifying, whatever other choices you make.
Oct was The 4th Annual Neuroscience Meets Recovery Conference in Las Vegas, where I heard many informative lectures, including one on PTSD from Dr. Robert Scaer, who confirmed my own clinical experience that many serious psychological issues, including addiction, can be a result of post traumatic stress disorder. With the right psychotherapy, the issues can be overcome relatively quickly, without the long-term use of psychotropic medication. I also heard a talk on Brain State Technologies, by Dr. Lee Gerdes, and ended up visiting his training facility in Scottdale. This is an excellent diagnostic and treatment modality for a whole range of brain disorders, including traumatic brain injury, ADD, insomnia, addiction, depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Retraining your brain will put you on the path to changing dysfunctional patterns and implanting new, healthier ones—really, just clearing out the bad programming and allowing your brain to function as it was meant to. The company has centers all over the country.
11th Annual Canadian Energy Psychology Conference in Toronto (organized by Sharon Cass Toole who also happens to be my sister) where I had a wonderful time refining my use of energy psychotherapy techniques such as EFT (emotional freedom technique: emofree.com). I had a chance to visit with my family, too, including my mother, and Sharon’s 1 month- old grandson, Jordan (my grand-nephew). I also spent time with fascinating speakers such as Donna Eden, David Feinstein, and Dawson Church, author of the Genie in Your Genes, which reiterates an important concept: you are not a slave to your genes! You can change your propensity to certain disorders with nutrition and such energy psychology methods as EFT (www.emofree.com).
American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM) in Las Vegas in Nov: After several years as board advisor and then board member, I attended my final board meeting at ACAM where we discussed plans to have more connection with other organizations for physicians who practice functional/alternative medicine. Topics included the clinical use of bio-identical hormones, chelation, and oxidative therapies; and a brilliant lecture by Loren Cordain on the Caveman Diet, and how later foods, from grains to modern junk food, can adversely effect our metabolism, cause chronic illness, and shorten our lives. I saw many dear friend and colleagues, in particular one whom I’d met while speaking at the Mayo Clinic last year, Dr. Luis Rodriguez from Playa Carmen in the Yucatan. He does innovative functional medicine, including creative uses of oxidative therapies. ACAM also supplies names of integrative physicians all over the country (and world).
Supply Side West in Las Vegas in December brought together the suppliers of supplement ingredients – including the ones that I use when creating new formulas. Emphasis was on quality control from within the industry. A reminder– don’t buy just any off-the-shelf supplement, but make sure you know the source and that the manufacturer uses GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices). I choose my manufacturers carefully for just this reason.
Healing Your Hunger in Santa Monica: Tricia Greaves hosted an inspiring day-long conference on all aspects of weight loss. I presented my successes with various supplements including the hormone, HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) for quick and easy weight loss. I’ve had numerous “tough cases” of “I just can’t lose it”—anywhere from 10-40 pounds. With the special diet and hcg combination, they all lost it and didn’t complain about it’s being too hard, being too hungry, etc—all the usual issues. Instead, they all reported back how happy they were with their new look and they have all kept the weight off as well, even through the recent holidays. Congratulations to you out there – you know who you are! Contact my office for more information on the hcg diet.
Micronutrient and Mental Health Conference in San Francisco in Dec: Sponsored by Truehope from Alberta, manufacturer of EMPower Plus formula for the brain, and Genesa, manufacturer of Total Amino Solution, a powerful new product that I am now using in my practice, to complement my own formulas. There was a great deal of research presented on how vitamins and minerals are essential for maintaining our brain function: their lack causes a range of brain disease from anxiety and depression to bipolar illness – and can be corrected with the appropriate nutritional supplementation.
I'll be at Parker Seminars in Las Vegas, Jan 14-16, checking in with the fabulous Dr. Fabrizio Mancini, President of Parker College, who generously invited me to speak there for the past 2 years. I'll be supporting Metabolic Maintenance, the manufacturer of Brain Recovery AM &PM and Brain Cell Support, as well as Jim Harper, author of The Road Back. Jim has been an activist and pioneer in helping individuals get off psychiatric medications with the use of specific supplements.
Jewish Healing Center L.A., has invited me to speak at their monthly meditation and lecture series, Jan 25th, on Living Longer...and Better: Tools for Preserving Health and Vitality.
For more presentations, in Los Angeles and elsewhere, see my Events Page, regularly.
